Honey tea – smoothness from the south of Africa

Honeybush, an infusion made from South African honeybush, is perfect for those looking for smoothness, natural sweetness and calm in a beverage. It is made from the leaves, stalks and small flowers of a plant related to the well-known rooibos, but its taste is more delicate and honey-like, hence the name.

Europeans first came across honeybush at the beginning of the 18th century in the vicinity of Cape Town. The local inhabitants had been using it for a long time as a daily beverage, favoured for its pleasant aroma and soothing effect. The honeybush production process is similar to the production of rooibos: the collected parts of the plant are fermented, then dried and prepared for packing. It is the fermentation that is responsible for the characteristic colour of the brew and its smooth, naturally sweet flavour.

One of the biggest advantages of honeybush is the total absence of caffeine. Thanks to this, honeybush does not have a stimulating effect and may be drunk at any time of day, even in the evenings, by children and anyone sensitive to caffeine. Traditionally, this brew was  served when someone was suffering from a cold or fatigue. It contains, among other things, pinitol, a natural compound from the group of sugar alcohols, which is the subject of studies due to its potential impact on the regulation of blood sugar level. Honeybush is also a source of anti-oxidants which support natural defense mechanisms in the body.

Brewing honeybush is very easy and undemanding One or two teaspoons of the dried product is enough for one litre of water. The infusion is made with boiling water and left to brew for 5 to 20 minutes – the longer it steeps, the fuller the taste, without the risk of bitterness. Honeybush mixes well with some additions: it can be served with milk, a touch of honey or sugar, although many of its enthusiasts appreciate its natural sweetness, without any additions.
